This past weekend my girlfriends and I got together for a camping trip at the White River Campground in the Mt. Rainier National Park. We spent the first night at my parents who live an hour away, and stuffed ourselves with salmon, a fruit tart and blackberry wine! The plan was to go to bed early so we could get a good start in the morning, but we ended staying up late into the night reading tarot cards, sitting by the fire and watching a meteor shower.
The next morning we woke around 6am and were heading out by 7. It took an hour to get there, and we were very lucky to grab a spot! In the future I would recommend grabbing a spot on Friday, but someone happened to be leaving early on Saturday and gave us their campsite. You can see when each group is leaving by reading the white tag on the edge of their site; the number indicates which date they are packing up. Also be forewarned: there is no cell service so if you lose your party be sure there is a set meeting place! We made that mistake…
We spent the afternoon on a 6 mile hike up to the Glacier Basin Trail. The weather was warm and the views phenomenal. Mount Rainier took up the entire sky and the White River was flowing past us the entire time. At the top of the trail we found a spot by the river and ate our packed lunches of PB&J sandwiches, granola bars and apples. After lying in the sun for a bit we headed back to the campsite. It was a good 4-5 hour hike!
That night we made grilled veggies and hot dogs, s’mores and drank ice cold beer, cooled by the stream next to our campsite. We sat by the campfire and ended up crashing pretty early, tuckered out from the hike. In the morning we made bacon, eggs and coconut pancakes, sipped coffee and chatted for quite a while, not wanting to head back to our city lives. It was a much needed girls’ getaway!
